US appeals court decision that the Patriot Act did not permit mass collection and surveillance of Americans’ phone records by the National Security Agency.

A reminder that the symbolism of @Snowden minting his first NFT goes far beyond the price tag.

The decentralized technologies powering this auction will fundamentally reshape our world — precisely to curb the abuse of power @Snowden spoke out against.https://t.co/ofNi1nSwzZ

While the ACLU won that case, Snowden remains persona non grata in the US for his role in making the NSA’s surveillance program public. In 2013, while the computer analyst was contracting for the security agency, he began leaking classified documents to the press.

A former CIA agent and fugitive Edward Snowden has unveiled a work of art that incorporates a selfie of himself in his living room, with the title “snowden nft selfportrait”. The artwork is part of an auction where the price can rise to as much as $1m. It is being sold by online charity Good Art to raise money for victims of war.

“I wasn’t just going to let my story die,” Snowden said. “As long as the surveillance state continues, I want to be able to use these experiences – these artworks – not only in protest but in celebration.”

The self-portrait was drawn on a light-blue card using blue ink and markers.

Shortly after being charged with espionage, Snowden flew to Russia, where he was granted asylum, then residency.

Snowden sold the artwork on Foundation, a community-driven NFT marketplace where the Overly Attached Girlfriend NFT sold for 200 ETH and a Nyan Cat animation earned 300.

Those amounts seem relatively paltry to the 2,224 ETH spent on Stay Free, Snowden’s first NFT.

NFTs are unique digital tokens that often come in the form of artwork, trading cards, or other collectibles. There is only one edition of “Stay Free,” meaning the auction winner, @PleasrDAO (fans of digital artist pplpleasr, who also sells lucrative NFTs), has the only copy of the work.

Today, NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden’s NFT sold for about $5.4 million, or 2,224 ETH. The NFT is of an artwork that shows an image of Snowden’s face made from pages of a US appeals court decision that ruled the mass surveillance program Snowden exposed had violated US law.

The image is called “Stay Free.”

The profits won’t go to America’s most famous exiled whistleblower, however. Instead, the sale is meant to benefit the Freedom of the Press Foundation, where Snowden is the president. Its board includes actor John Cusack, whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg, and the writer Glenn Greenwald.

“Emerging applications of cryptography can play an important role in supporting our rights,” Snowden said in a statement from the Freedom of the Press Foundation.

    Gizmodo reports:

The latest big name to get in on the NFT craze is former intelligence contractor and whistleblower Edward Snowden, who on Friday auctioned off an original NFT art piece for roughly $5.4 million worth of the cryptocurrency Ether. Titled ‘Stay Free’, it’s a digital self-portrait made out of pages from a U.S. Court of Appeals decision that ruled the National Security Agency’s widespread surveillance of phone records violated the law, a practice Snowden brought to light in 2013 by leaking classified NSA secrets to journalists…

NFTs or non-fungible tokens are usually pieces of photos, videos and other digital objects that have been signed and verified by the creator. When someone buys an NFT, they get ownership of a unique piece of code that’s stored on a blockchain. As we wrote in our in-depth explanation of what NFTs are, “[Y]ou can duplicate a file a thousand times and they’ll all turn out the same, but only the one tied to an NFT is the real deal.”

While NFTs could help out artists and creators, more and more people have started raising concerns about their environmental impact. When an artist “mints” their work onto a blockchain so that they can make an NFT, they start a process that uses a lot of computing power and energy.

They help avoid cases of duplication in that even if one duplicates it multiple times, the one on the NFT will be the only authentic and original copy.

The rise of NFTs has raised concern among environmentalists where they point out the high level of energy and computing power needed to mint their artwork on a blockchain. However, the not-for-profit organization on which Snowden is president announced that they would balance off the carbon footprints used in creating Snowden’s NFT.

    The importance of NFTs

NFTs are very important in that they help in protecting the work of artists and art creators. They enable this by inhibiting the possibility of duplication and protecting the authenticity of original pieces.

NFTs are also being used to fund charity organizations.
